Cafayate is one of South America's most remarkable wine towns: 1,700 metres above sea level in the Calchaquí Valleys, producer of the world's finest Torrontés and increasingly recognized high-altitude Malbec. Surrounded by dramatic red sandstone canyons, it combines first-class oenology, adventure and colonial calm in a concentration few destinations can match.
Premium wineries — El Esteco, Piatelli, Nanni, El Porvenir and Lavaque: some of Argentina's highest-altitude wineries, with top-level private tasting programs. Quebrada de Cafayate — Route 68 road journey through red sandstone formations: Garganta del Diablo, El Anfiteatro, Los Castillos — one of the country's most impressive scenic settings. Artisan workshops — Local leather, textile and silver production by master artisans from family traditions. Horseback riding and trekking — Rides between vineyards and hills; ascent to Cerro San Isidro with valley views.
Patios de Cafayate Hotel & Spa — Former El Esteco winery converted into the region's finest hotel: hacienda architecture, spa and private tastings in its own vineyard. The undisputed reference for luxury tourism in northern Argentina. Villa Vicuña — Nine-room boutique hotel, exceptional garden and intimate atmosphere. Killa — Design hotel with vineyard views and a carefully curated gastronomic proposal.
Tastings of Torrontés and high-altitude Malbec are the axis of every gastronomic experience in Cafayate. The restaurant at Patios de Cafayate offers signature regional cuisine paired with the winery's production. Salteña empanadas, braised kid goat and regional cheeses complete a repertoire with Andean roots. El Rancho is the reference for uncompromising authentic local cooking.
At approximately 1,400 km from Buenos Aires, the usual option is to fly to Salta (SLA) in around 1 h 50 min and continue with a three-hour private transfer through the Quebrada de Cafayate. Some operators can land directly on the local runway. There is no commercial service to Cafayate: private aviation drastically reduces total travel time and allows the itinerary to be built around the wineries.
March–October: optimal — harvest in April–May, dry season for exploring the Quebrada and mild temperatures. November–February: summer, warmer but active in the wineries during harvest preparation.
