Colonia del Sacramento is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in the Americas: a UNESCO World Heritage site on the Río de la Plata, founded by the Portuguese in 1680. Its cobbled historic quarter is about 25 minutes by private flight from Buenos Aires — Portuguese tiles, a colonial lighthouse and Uruguay’s oldest wine country a short drive away.
Barrio Histórico — 17th-century walls, Calle de los Suspiros, the lighthouse.
Wine route — Irurtia and Narbona in Carmelo (about 75 km / one hour).
Carmelo — riverside day 40 minutes from Colonia.
Estuary fishing — dorado and boga on the world’s widest river.
Sunset from the lighthouse — the iconic Plata view.
El Capullo Boutique Hotel — the best boutique in the historic quarter. Posada Plaza Mayor — historic building, human scale. Most visitors use Colonia as a day extension; for a longer stay, Carmelo Resort & Spa (Hyatt) is the regional reference, about 75 km away.
Uruguayan chivito, river-fish parrilla and Tannat with a Plata view. La Bodeguita is the classic pizzería on the river (since 1993). In the old town, Charco Bistró and neighbourhood tables. Portuguese pastry survives in the bakeries.
About 75 km from San Fernando; the flight is around 20 minutes. The fast ferry is about 1 h 15: private aviation turns Colonia from a day trip into a genuine luxury weekend, without ferry slots or customs queues.
Year-round. October–December and March–May are the most pleasant. December–March is Argentine high season.
