San Salvador de Jujuy is the gateway to Argentina's most visually dramatic landscape: the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Hill of Seven Colours in Purmamarca, pre-Inca fortresses and the surreal high plateau at 3,400 metres. A destination for travellers seeking cultural depth alongside extraordinary natural scenery.
Hill of Seven Colours — Purmamarca's iconic hill, best at sunrise, when the light reveals the polychromy of its sedimentary layers. Quebrada de Humahuaca — A 150 km valley of multicoloured rock formations, colonial villages and living Andean culture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Pucará de Tilcara — Reconstructed pre-Inca fortress on a hill overlooking the valley, with a first-rate archaeological museum. Salinas Grandes — One of the world's largest salt flats at 3,450 metres, with absolute geometry and whiteness. Artisan markets — Textile, ceramic and Andean silver fairs featuring production from Indigenous communities.
El Manantial del Silencio — The quebrada's most exclusive option: 14 rooms in Purmamarca with panoramic views of the Hill of Seven Colours, adobe-and-stone architecture and total silence. La Comarca Purmamarca — Boutique hotel with artisan interiors, interior garden and highly attentive service. Posada El Arribo — Historic house in central Purmamarca, intimate and well located.
Locro, humitas, tamales and llama preparations make up a repertoire of Andean cuisine with millenary tradition. Purmamarca's Sunday markets offer artisanal cheeses and Puna products. La Posta de Purmamarca is the local reference for authentic regional cuisine; the Ruta del Adobe circuit combines wine and empanadas in quebrada wineries.
At approximately 1,500 km from Buenos Aires, a private aircraft flight takes around two hours, landing at Gobernador Horacio Guzmán Airport (JUJ), 32 km from Jujuy city and 70 km from Purmamarca. Commercial service is scarce and does not connect with the quebrada villages. Private aviation is the only way to reach the region with full control of the itinerary.
Dry season (April–October): optimal — perfect visibility, clear Andean skies and access to every route. Wet season (December–March): greener, more vivid high plateau, but possible road closures due to summer rains.
