El Calafate is the gateway to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Perito Moreno Glacier — one of the few glaciers in the world that is still actively advancing, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Starting point for high-end Patagonian expeditions combining glaciology, demanding trekking, wildlife and ultra-luxury estancias in the steppe, El Calafate attracts sophisticated travellers seeking the genuinely remote without sacrificing first-class hospitality.
Perito Moreno Glacier — walkways and ice trekking — The panoramic walkways of the National Park offer an unmatched perspective of the glacier front. For closer access, Big Ice and Minitrekking (organized through Hielo y Aventura) allow walking directly on the glacier with crampons. One of South America's most powerful experiences.
Boat excursions in Los Glaciares National Park — Private navigation to Upsala, Spegazzini and Onelli glaciers, accessible only by water. Upsala is one of South America's largest glaciers and can only be reached from Lago Argentino.
El Chaltén and the Fitz Roy massif — 220 kilometres from El Calafate, El Chaltén is Argentina's trekking capital. Fitz Roy (3,405 m) and Cerro Torre (3,128 m) are among the planet's most dramatic and photographed peaks. Full-day private excursion.
Exclusive Patagonian estancias — The region concentrates some of the country's most exclusive estancias: horseback rides through the steppe, Patagonian lamb asado cooked on the cross and birdwatching (condors, flamingos at Laguna Nimez).
Estancia Cristina — Exclusive lodge in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, accessible only by boat from Puerto Banderas. Maximum 30 guests. A combination of glaciology, guided trekking and uncompromising Patagonian authenticity.
Eolo Patagonia's Spirit — Design lodge in the open steppe, with 360-degree views and private excursion program. One of Argentine Patagonia's most architecturally distinctive properties.
Xelena Hotel & Suites — The highest-level accommodation in town, with contemporary design and panoramic views of Lago Argentino. Ideal base for itineraries centered on El Calafate.
Patagonian lamb roasted on the cross is the region's signature dish — sourced from open-range animals and slow-cooked for hours, it is a culinary and cultural experience in itself. La Tablita is the local classic reference for lamb asado in El Calafate. Boutique estancias have incorporated native Patagonian herbs and signature cooking techniques that are redefining regional cuisine in a more contemporary register.
At approximately 2,700 kilometres from Buenos Aires, a private flight covers the route in around 3.5 hours nonstop. FTE airport (Comandante Armando Tola) is 20 kilometres from town. Commercial flights to El Calafate are limited and record one of the country's highest cancellation rates due to Patagonian winds — making private aviation the most reliable option for coordinating cruise embarkations, trekking windows or reservations at remote-access estancias.
Summer (November–March): best conditions for glacier trekking, up to 20 hours of daylight and mild weather. Optimal season for Fitz Roy and lake excursions. Winter and shoulder seasons (April–October): ice trekking remains available, visitor numbers drop, winter Patagonian light is extraordinarily photogenic and estancias offer greater privacy.
