Río Gallegos is the capital of Santa Cruz and the main administrative and energy center of southern Patagonia in Argentina. With 100,000 inhabitants on the estuary of the Gallegos River—a few kilometers from the Strait of Magellan—the city is the essential hub for operations in the hydrocarbon sector of the southern basin and the transit point for those heading to Torres del Paine from the Argentine side. Its status as a transit city for some is, for others, an opportunity: the Santa Cruz steppe, the volcanic lagoon of the Pampas Negras and the Gallegos estuary preserve an extreme and rarely visited nature.
Blue Lagoon — 55 km from the city, this lagoon of volcanic origin occupies the perfect crater of an extinct maar. The deep blue water in the middle of the black steppe is one of the most unique landscapes in Patagonia; Access requires a 4x4 vehicle and favorable weather conditions.
Access to Torres del Paine (Chile) — Río Gallegos is the Argentine base to enter the Chilean Torres del Paine national park through the Cerro Castillo pass, a 3-hour drive by route. For executive or high-end tourism groups visiting the park, flying to RGL is the least congested alternative to the Punta Arenas airport.
Gallegos River Estuary — A Ramsar site of international importance, the estuary is a corridor for first-class migratory birds: plovers, sandpipers and southern gulls in season. The tides of the strait create unique viewing conditions.
Cabo Vírgenes Provincial Reserve — At 130 km, one of the largest colonies of Magellanic penguins in the southern hemisphere, with more than 100,000 breeding pairs and direct views of the Strait of Magellan.
Hotel Santa Cruz (executive reference of the city, infrastructure for business trips). Hotel Comercio (historic establishment in the center). Hotel Pilmaiquén (comfortable option for short stays and transit groups).
The gastronomy of Río Gallegos pivots on lamb from the Santa Cruz steppe – considered among the best in the country due to its natural pastures – and seafood from the strait: crab, cholgas and rock shellfish. El Horno de Barro and La Estancia are local references for Patagonian meats. The surrounding livestock establishments organize ranch barbecues for private groups.
Torres del Paine and active tourism: October to April. Penguins in Cabo Vírgenes: October to March. Business operations (hydrocarbons): active destination throughout the year. Migratory birds in the estuary: October to March.
