Esquel is the gateway to Los Alerces National Park — a wild territory declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, where ancient larch forests (Fitzroya cupressoides) guard glacial lakes with turquoise water and rivers that are among the best in the world for fly fishing. One of the best kept secrets of Argentine Patagonia for the traveler who seeks first-class nature without overcrowding.
Los Alerces National Park — El Abuelo — The boat excursion on Lake Menéndez takes you to a 2,600-year-old specimen of larch, one of the oldest living organisms on the planet. An experience on a geological scale that has no equivalent in any other destination in South America.
Fly fishing in the Futaleufú, Corcovado and Arrayanes rivers — Crystal clear mountain rivers with high density wild rainbow and brown trout. October-April season. Exclusive fishing lodges with certified guides and access to river sectors on a private basis.
La Trochita The narrow gauge steam train that connects Esquel with El Maitén, one of the last steam railways in regular operation in the world. Immortalized by Paul Theroux in The Old Patagonia Express, the excursion is a journey through time of high cultural value.
Trekking and horse riding in Mapuche territory — Trails to Laguna Verde and Lake Kruger, with the possibility of horseback riding guided by local Mapuche communities. The landscape combines coihue forests, mallines and lake beaches with exclusive access.
Lake Cabins — Lakefront accommodation with direct access to the water, in a very quiet forest and mountain environment. Hostería La Chacra — Classic ranch style property on the outskirts of Esquel, with authentic atmosphere and personalized hospitality. For more exclusive fishing stays, the lodges on private river fronts in the Futaleufú and Corcovado region are the reference option — recommended consultation with specialized local operators.
Esquel's cuisine is austere and genuine — Patagonian lamb, river trout in all its preparations, wild boar and artisanal smoked meats define the local table. The Tour d'Argent It is the classic restaurant of reference in the city, with a cuisine that promotes regional products without artifice. The artisanal smoked trout and wild boar produced in the area are of export quality.
Approximately 1,600 kilometers from Buenos Aires, the private flight covers the journey in around two direct hours. The EQS airport (Esquel) is just 2 kilometers from the town center — one of the best airport-center distance ratios in Patagonia. Commercial flights are infrequent and seasonal in offer, making private aviation the only reliable option for coordinating fishing guides, park permits, and check-in at remote-access lodges.
Summer (noviembre–abril): fly fishing season, boat excursions through the National Park, trekking and optimal conditions for lake navigation. Winter: the park in absolute silence, La Trochita among the snow, the larch forests under the frost — a winter nature experience of great photographic intensity for the traveler who values isolation.
