Trelew is the privileged gateway to one of the most exceptional coastal ecosystems on the planet: the Valdés Peninsula, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This Patagonian city with a solid Welsh tradition combines a well-equipped airport, efficient logistics and immediate access to world-class wildlife, making it the ideal entry point for the discerning traveler who prioritizes authenticity and intimacy with nature.
The Valdés Peninsula concentrates the best marine fauna experiences in South America: sightings of southern right whales (July to December), orcas hunting sea lions in Punta Norte, colonies of elephant seals and the Punta Tombo penguin colony, the largest continental colony of Magellanic penguins. Private zodiacs allow exclusive approaches to cetaceans without the massification of group tourism. The Chubut interior also offers historic wool farms, petroglyphs and the unique Welsh architecture of Gaiman and Dolavon, with their tea houses of Victorian origin.
The highest level accommodation offer is concentrated in the natural environments of the peninsula: the Rincón Chico lodge, within the private nature reserve of the same name, is the exclusivity reference in Valdés, with Patagonian design rooms, private guides and direct access to beaches with sea lions. In Puerto Madryn, the Territorio hotel offers the highest standards in the city, with views of the gulf and personalized service for small groups.
The seafood industry on the Chubut coast provides crab, mussels, scallops and fresh hake of the highest quality. In Trelew and Puerto Madryn, restaurants such as El Nautico and the El Viejo Lobo rotisserie maintain honest, product-based maritime cuisine. The ranches in the region maintain the tradition of Patagonian roast with lamb on the cross, accompanied by Patagonian wines from Río Negro and Neuquén that complete a table of genuine character.
The southern right whale season—July to December—is the period of greatest demand, with September and October peaking for spectacular behaviors, including breaching and courtship. Orcas stranded in Punta Norte reach their highest frequency between February and April. For the Punta Tombo penguin colony, the months from September to March offer the colony in full activity. The Patagonian summer (December to February) is ideal for combining marine fauna with sailing and fishing in the Nuevo and San José gulfs.
