Puerto Madryn is the centre of Patagonia's Atlantic coast and the gateway to Península Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage reserve. Its marine ecosystem hosts one of the world's most diverse wildlife spectacles: southern right whales, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, orcas and sea lions, each species in its season, all within reach of a comfortable coastal city. Nowhere else on the planet does this concentration of megafauna sit so close to quality infrastructure.
Whale watching in Península Valdés — Southern right whales arrive between July and November at Caleta Valdés and Puerto Pirámides to breed. At Playa El Doradillo they come within metres of the shore — one of the few phenomena of its kind in the world.
Punta Tombo penguin colony — The world's largest continental colony of Magellanic penguins, with more than 500,000 birds. Accessible as a day trip from Madryn between October and March.
Elephant seals and sea lions — Elephant seal colonies at Punta Delgada and Caleta Valdés; sea lions at Punta Loma, accessible year-round.
Orca hunting at Punta Norte — Between February and April, orcas perform deliberate strandings to hunt sea lions on the beach. A BBC-filmed phenomenon with strictly seasonal access.
Diving and snorkelling with sea lions — The South Atlantic waters off Madryn offer exceptional visibility and accessible summer temperatures, with unique underwater encounters.
Hotel Territorio — Puerto Madryn's most distinguished accommodation: contemporary design, gulf views and a superior-level restaurant. A reference for private clients.
Hostería La Elvira — Intimate boutique property in Puerto Pirámides, the village inside the reserve. The ideal base for whale watching, metres from the pier.
Ecoposada del Istmo — Ecological lodge near Punta Norte, with privileged access to wildlife areas and the possibility of early observation before mass tourism opens.
The South Atlantic provides the raw material: southern king crab, mussels and clams from the gulf, hake and fresh daily seafood. Placido is the high-level seafood reference in Madryn; Márquez, the local institution with decades of history. In Trelew — 65 km away — Welsh tea houses keep alive a 19th-century settler tradition found nowhere else in South America.
Puerto Madryn is approximately 1,400 km from Buenos Aires — around 1 h 50 min by private aircraft. PMY airport (El Tehuelche) is 10 km from the centre. The decisive advantage of a private flight here is wildlife coordination: viewing permits, specialist guides and tide schedules operate within narrow windows that scarce, rigid commercial flights rarely allow travellers to use fully.
July to November — Southern right whale season; peak in September and October.
October to March — Penguins at Punta Tombo; warmer weather, ideal for diving.
February to April — Orca hunting season at Punta Norte.
Sea lions and elephant seals are present year-round.
