General Pico is the second city of La Pampa - 65,000 inhabitants, 490 km west of Buenos Aires - and the nerve center of Pampas agribusiness: agricultural machinery, grain collection, sunflower and soybean production, and one of the most organized networks of agricultural cooperatives in the country. For the executive of the primary or agroindustrial sector, General Pico is a substantive business center with limited commercial connectivity that makes private flights the natural solution. For the high-end traveler, the surrounding fields and ranches offer a hunting and scenic experience that conventional tourist circuits ignore.
Sport hunting in La Pampa ranches — The Pampas plain around General Pico is one of the most productive hunting territories for red partridge and martineta in Argentina. The ranches in the central-north of La Pampa organize hunting days with specialized guides, pointer dogs and complete equipment. Main season: March to August, peaking in autumn.
Lihué Calel National Park — 200 km to the south, a granite massif that emerges abruptly from the plain as a geological anomaly of great beauty: the "hill of life" in the Ranquel language. Habitat of pumas, guanacos, maras and endemic xerophytic flora. One of the least frequented and most impressive natural reserves in northern Patagonia.
Agricultural landscape and rural culture — The surrounding livestock and agricultural establishments offer an immersion in the culture of the Pampas countryside: field trips, ranch barbecues and the human scale of an Argentine inland city with its own identity.
Don Tomás Lagoon (Santa Rosa) — 110 km from General Pico, in the provincial capital, the urban lagoon of Santa Rosa is a mirror of water with flamingos and aquatic birds in a park environment, used as a stopover on itineraries that combine both Pampa cities.
Hotel Calín (General Pico, executive reference of the city). The surrounding ranches—several of them operating as hunting lodges—offer the most suitable accommodation for the traveler who comes to hunt or to live the experience of the Pampas countryside with standards of private comfort.
General Pico's cuisine is that of the Pampas interior in its most authentic expression: field roast with cuts of beef raised on natural pastures, artisanal sausages and a culture of slow fire inherited from the ranches. The Hotel Calín restaurant is the reference for executive travelers. In the ranches, roasting on the post or on the cross, with lamb or local goat, is the central experience of any visit.
General Pico is located approximately 490 km from Buenos Aires, with a flight time of 55 min to 1 h 10 min to General Pico Airport (GPO/SAZG). Commercial air service is minimal or non-existent in many seasons: private flights are the only efficient alternative for agricultural executives, cooperative directors and buyers of machinery that operate in the area. The runway supports piston aircraft, turboprops and light jets. The region's hunting lodges operate internal transfers from the airfield.
Sport hunting: March to August, with the best period in April-June (partridge and martineta). Lihué Calel: September to November (spring, flora in bloom) and March-May (autumn, more active fauna). Agroindustrial businesses: all year round, with peaks in the soybean (March-April) and sunflower (February-March) harvest.
