Posadas is the capital of Misiones and the access point to the Guarani Jesuit Missions circuit—an archaeological complex of exceptional scale and historical significance, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The province is also home to the Mocona Falls, one of the most unique hydrological formations on the continent, and constitutes the most important subtropical biodiversity corridor in Argentina. The city, on the Alto Paraná in front of Encarnación, combines riverside character with living Guaraní heritage.
Ruins of San Ignacio Mini The best preserved Jesuit mission of the 30 that existed in the region, founded in 1610. Red sandstone architecture of elaborate work, with a first-class night light and sound show.
Ruins of Santa Ana and Loreto — Less visited and more surrounded by vegetation, they offer a quieter and more immersive archaeological atmosphere than San Ignacio.
Missions of Paraguay — Cross to Encarnación and continue through the ruins of Trinidad and Jesús, also a UNESCO Heritage Site, equally extraordinary and almost always without tourists.
Mocona Falls — Lateral waterfalls on the Uruguay River, unique in the world: the river falls parallel to its own course for 3 km. Accessible from Eldorado in the missionary interior; In the rainy season they exceed Iguazú in flow.
Yabotí Biosphere Reserve — Dense missionary jungle, accessible from Oberá, with subtropical fauna and specialized trekking options.
Hotel Julio César — The established reference in Posadas for business travelers and high-level tourism. Complete facilities, good central location.
Boutique Hotel del Cielo — Newer and more careful option in terms of design and personalized attention, aimed at the demanding traveler.
For those seeking total historical immersion, there are stays close to the Jesuit circuit with direct access to the ruins outside official visiting hours.
The fish of Alto Paraná—dorado, surubí, and pacú—represent some of the best river fishing options in South America and are the basis of regional cuisine. The chipa —cheese bread of Guaraní origin— is omnipresent and of exceptional quality in the province. Nini offers local cuisine with river views. The culture of mate reaches its most deeply rooted expression within Argentina in Misiones.
Posadas is approximately 1,100 km from Buenos Aires—about 1 hour 30 minutes by private plane. PSS (General San Martín) airport is 12 km from the center. The private flight is essential for those who want to combine Posadas, the Jesuit circuit and the Mocona Falls in a single efficient trip: the internal distances are considerable and the commercial connections are scarce, making this tour impossible without days lost in stopovers.
April to November — Temporada seca, condiciones óptimas para visitar las ruinas y caminar los senderos. Temperatures confortables y menor humedad.
December to March — Humid and hot season. The jungle reaches its maximum exuberance and the Mocona Falls its greatest spectacularity, with the Uruguay River at full flow.
