Puerto Montt is the capital of the Los Lagos Region, in the north of Chilean Patagonia, and the main access hub to the Lake District, Chiloé and the Patagonian fjords. A port city with an industrial vocation—with one of the largest salmon industries in the world—and starting point for maritime routes to the most remote archipelagos in South America, it combines quality urban infrastructure with immediate access to nature of monumental proportions.
From Puerto Montt you can access some of the most impressive landscapes in Chile: the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park with the Osorno volcano, Todos los Santos lake and Salto del Petrohué; the Big Island of Chiloé with its UNESCO heritage churches and its ancestral culture; cruises through the Puyuhuapi and Aysén fjords; and the Camino de los Lagos that connects with Bariloche through the most famous lake pass in Patagonia. Sport fishing for salmon in the Lake District rivers is a world class experience.
Puerto Montt offers four-star hotels aimed at business travelers from the salmon industry and the port sector. The fishing and nature lodges in Puerto Varas —20 minutes away—, with direct views of the Osorno volcano over Lake Llanquihue, are the premium reference in the region: Cumbres Patagonicas and AWA Hotel are the most in-demand options for the high-profile segment.
Puerto Montt is the capital of Chilean seafood: the Angelmó market is legendary for its live crabs, cholgas, picorocos, parmesan machas and conger eel stews that combine tradition and unparalleled freshness. Chiloe cuisine includes curanto en hoyo – a feast of seafood, meat and potatoes cooked underground with hot stones – and potato milcao as unique specialties of the Chiloé archipelago.
El Tepual Airport (PMC) in Puerto Montt receives private aviation operations with full infrastructure. From San Fernando (FDO) in Buenos Aires, the jet charter covers the approximately 1,800 km in 2 h 10 min – 2 h 35 min depending on the aircraft, without mandatory commercial stops. For executives in the aquaculture or logistics sector who operate between Buenos Aires and southern Chile, or for families who combine the visit with activities in Patagonia, the flexibility of schedule and route of the private flight is a strategic differential.
Peak season in the Los Lagos Region is from December to February, with long days, mild temperatures and most outdoor activities in full operation. Spring (October-November) offers wild lupine flowers in the countryside and ideal conditions for fishing and trekking before the summer crowds. Autumn (March-April) presents spectacular colors in the myrtle and larch forests. Winter is cold and rainy, but it allows you to ski on the Osorno volcano and enjoy the region with minimal tourist influx.
