Puerto San Julián is a port city in Santa Cruz where Ferdinand Magellan wintered in 1520 during the first circumnavigation. At 1,816 km from Buenos Aires, it is the gateway to penguin colonies, Commerson's dolphins and Patagonian steppe, with no frequent commercial air service.
Magellanic penguin colony on Isla Cormorán —more than 100,000 breeding pairs— and Commerson's dolphin viewing in the bay. Steppe wildlife: guanacos, maras, rheas and Andean flamingos. Cueva de las Manos —UNESCO World Heritage— in the Santa Cruz region. Sheep estancias with shearing and field cuisine.
Functional town hotels. The most distinctive experience is on private steppe estancias with isolation and family hospitality; book ahead through Patagonian nature operators.
Patagonian lamb on the grill with calafate wood. King crab, cholgas and mussels from the coast. On estancias, breakfasts with homemade preserves and farm bread.
Cap. D. Vázquez Airport (ULA / SAWJ) serves general aviation and charter only. From San Fernando (FDO), about 1,816 km is covered in 2 h 20 min to 3 h 5 min. Enables one- or two-day wildlife trips without commercial connections or unnecessary overnights.
November to March: penguin and marine wildlife season with long days and temperatures between 12 °C and 22 °C. Constant Patagonian wind; summer more stable for coastal navigation. Estancias open October to April.
