The city of Perito Moreno in Santa Cruz is the gateway to the Cave of the Hands—UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the most important rock art sites on the planet, with paintings of hands dating back 9,000 years—and to the basin of Lake Buenos Aires, shared with Chile under the name of Lake General Carrera. For the traveler seeking authentic Patagonia and pre-Columbian heritage without the crowds, it is one of the most rewarding and least visited destinations in Argentina.
Cave of the Hands — The Pinturas River canyon houses more than 800 stencils of hands and hunting scenes in ocher, red and black: one of the most important collections of prehistoric art in the Americas, declared a World Heritage Site. Lake Buenos Aires / General Carrera — The binational turquoise marble lake, with the Puerto Río Tranquilo Marble Caves accessible from the Chilean side 2 hours from the city. The Ancients — 60 km away, privileged microclimate famous for its cherries; harvest festival in January and February. 4x4 exploration — Deseado River Valley, observation of condors and pumas in the open field, Patagonian steppe without mediations.
Cueva de las Manos Stay: the accommodation closest to the rock site, the most immersive option and with the greatest demand - advance reservation essential. Belgrano Hotel: reference in the center of Perito Moreno, functional base for expeditions. Several ranches in the vicinity of Los Antiguos offer a more comfortable base for access to the lake and farms.
Flame-roasted Patagonian lamb on an iron rack is the central gastronomic experience of this part of Patagonia. The ranch cuisine—chivito, artisanal goat cheese—is the authentic offering of the territory. In January and February, the cherries and artisan products of Los Antiguos are a must-see.
Perito Moreno is located about 2,300 km from Buenos Aires, approximately 3 hours by private jet. PMQ airport is 7 km from the center. The city lacks regular commercial air service: without private aviation, access requires a two-day land trip from Comodoro Rivadavia or El Calafate. Direct flight is the only practical way to organize a visit with the Cave of the Hands on the itinerary.
November to April: Patagonian summer, optimal conditions for the Cueva de las Manos, cherry harvest in Los Antiguos during January and February. May to October: harsh southern winter, most local services close or reduce their operation.
